Meet Devin Cortez

Today we'd like to introduce you to Devin Cortez.

Devin, before we jump into it, why don't you tell us a little about your story.

I started performing in Musical Theater when I was 8 years old with Orange County Children's Theatre (OCCT). As I grew with the program, I learned about the Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) from older OCCT members. From the APA program, I was introduced to the Rose Center Theater, where my training and development grew as I performed on the Rose stage throughout high school.

After high school, I was then encouraged to pursue a professional career in the arts professionally. I went on to attend Emerson College, enrolling in their BFA musical theater program. Post graduation, I have obtained my AEA membership, worked professionally for multiple theaters across the country- as a principal singer on Norwegian Cruise Line, originated a role in an original musical with a Tony Award winning director- and taught acting, singing, and dancing to up and coming artists.

Overall, has it been a rather smooth road? If not, what are some of the struggles you've experienced along the way?

I have been very lucky in that for the most part it has been a smooth road. However I, like most artists, have experienced a fair amount of struggle along the way.

Can you tell us about what you are currently working on? Anything you have been focused on during this time of quarantine?

I'm currently working for Park Playhouse in Albany, New York teaching their online summer workshop classes.

What has been the proudest or most memorable moment of your career so far?

First, throughout my time in the theater, I have made so many lifelong friends of which I have created so many cherished memories.

As far as my proudest moment, creating the role of Miguelon in HAVANA!, an original musical composed by Ryan Scott Oliver, and directed by Warren Carlyle. Working with that incredibly talented cast and team was life changing. The quality of the production was unmatched compared to anything I've ever done before. It was truly a Broadway budget production.
