Audition Notice for Disney's The Little Mermaid

The Rose Center Theater is seeking talented performers local to the Orange County and Los Angeles areas who can sing, act, dance, and tap in the underwater musical production of Disney's The Little Mermaid! The Rose Center Theater encourages performers of all ages, race or ethnicity, physical abilities, gender identities, religion and diverse viewpoints to audition.

If you are unable to attend the in-person audition, the creative team also encourages performers to submit a self-tape. See below for self-tape audition information.

 

AUDITIONS FOR DISNEY'S THE LITTLE MERMAID HAVE PAST. PLEASE SIGN UP TO RECEIVE UPDATES ON FUTURE AUDITIONS BY VISITING THE GET-INVOLVED PAGE.

WHAT TO PREPARE FOR THE IN-PERSON AUDITIONS

Please prepare & bring sheet music for 16-32 bars (no more than 1 min.) of a classic or similar style musical theater song. Singing from the show is acceptable. An accompanist and score will be provided. Please bring a HEADSHOT and RESUME. All those auditioning, except for those who only want to be considered for the role of GRIMSBY will be requested to take part in a dance/movement and tap evaluation. Please dress and/or bring appropriate clothes and shoes accordingly.

 

THE WINDOW TO SCHEDULE AN IN-PERSON AUDITION APPOINTMENT HAS CLOSED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THE NEXT AUDITIONS.

IF YOU WOULD STILL LIKE TO SUBMIT A SELF TAPE, YOU MAY DO SO BY FOLLOWING THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS:

INSTRUCTIONS TO SUBMIT A SELF TAPE

Step 1: Record yourself in a quiet and well-lit area. Please be sure we can hear and see you clearly. If using a phone, please make sure you're recording in landscape (horizontal). 

SLATE: Please include a slate with your name, height, and current location.

SONG: Please sing 32 bars (approximately 1 min.) of a song similar to the style of the musical. Singing from the show is acceptable. 

Step 2: Upload your self tape to a video sharing site (YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, etc.).

Step 3: Fill out the Audition Registration Form to submit your tape.

     SELF TAPES ARE DUE BY 11:00 PM PDT ON FRIDAY JANUARY 6TH.

Callbacks are at the invitation of the Artistic Team and are scheduled to take place on

CONTRACT

This is a non-union, civic theater production.

SEEKING TALENT FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES

(note most leading underwater roles will require the ability to perform in ‘Heelys’)

ARIEL:

A mermaid and King Triton's youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hard headed, naive, and emotional, but also kind hearted. Character is female; Age: late teens to mid 20’s; Vocal range: Clear Belt or Mix to E.

PRINCE ERIC:

A human monarch who has no interest in taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more. Character is male; Age: 20’s to early 30’s; Vocal range: controlled lyrical tenor or baritenor.

URSULA:

The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating, and deceptive. Character is female; Age: 30’s to 50’s; Vocal range: Alto

SEBASTIAN:

A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can't bring himself to stand in Ariel's way. Character is male; Age: 30’s to 40’s; Must have good comedic timing; Vocal range: tenor with an extended falsetto.

 

FLOTSAM & JETSAM:

An eel duo, and Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, they will say anything you want or need to hear.

Character is any gender; Age: 20’s to 40’s; Must have good comedic timing and be able to move fluidly; Vocal ranges: Low Alto/High Tenor

 

GRIMSBY:

Prince Eric's British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties. Characters is male; Age: 40’s to 60’s; Light character vocals only; a la Gilbert and Sullivan

FLOUNDER:

A young fish and best friends with Ariel. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water. Characters is male; Age: 10-13; Must be able to sing and move well; Vocal range: boy soprano with good pop sensibility. Belt to a strong Eb.

SCUTTLE:

A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit uninformed, despite his supposed expertise. Characters is male; Age: 20’s to 50’s; Must have strong table abilities.

CHEF LOUIS:

The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular. Characters is male; Age: 20’s to 50’s; Must be able to perform with a French accent; Vocal range: Tenor with a strong A.

THE MERSISTERS:

King Triton’s daughters and Ariel’s sisters (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, and Alana).

Characters are female; Age: late teens to 30’s; Must be able to harmonize; strong dancers/movers required; Vocal ranges: various

SUPPORTING ROLES & ENSEMBLE CHARACTERS:

Strong singers, actors, and dancers to play the Pilot, Gulls, Chefs, Maids, Princesses, Sailors, Merfolk, Sea Creatures, and various other featured roles. Especially seeking strong tappers. Ages 16+; All vocal types/ranges.
