Behind the Curtain: Something Rotten! Rehearsals Heat Up at Rose Center Theater

Renaissance Mayhem Has Entered the Building! At the Rose Center Theater, the air is filled with music, movement, and a whole lot of mischief. That can only mean one thing: rehearsals for Something Rotten! are in full swing.

From the moment the creative team gave the cast their first “Welcome to the Renaissance” cue, the rehearsal studio has been buzzing with energy. As the show’s unforgettable blend of Shakespearean satire and razzle-dazzle Broadway numbers begins to take shape, one thing is clear—this cast is ready to deliver one of the funniest and most spectacular productions the Rose Center has ever seen.

A Mashup of Musicals, Mayhem, and Pure Joy

Under the direction of Tim Nelson and a powerhouse creative team, actors are diving headfirst into this madcap musical. The show follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom as they attempt to outshine their rockstar rival William Shakespeare by creating the world’s first musical—complete with tap-dancing omelets, show-stopping chorus lines, and musical theater references galore.

Early rehearsals are already showcasing the zany brilliance of Something Rotten!—with tap shoes pounding out complex choreography, harmonies soaring through the rehearsal room, and ensemble members fully embracing their over-the-top Renaissance personas. “We were laughing so hard we had to stop and restart the scene,” one cast member shared. “This show doesn’t just break the fourth wall—it obliterates it.”

The Cast Chemistry is Rotten—in the Best Way Possible

From seasoned RCT veterans to newcomers making their debuts, the cast has clicked instantly, bringing camaraderie, comedy, and commitment to every rehearsal. Whether it’s practicing choreography in the lobby, running lines during breaks, or sharing character ideas between scenes, this group of performers is pouring everything into the production—and having a blast along the way. “This cast is incredible,” says choreographer Jennifer Matthews. “They’re fearless, funny, and full of heart. Every day in rehearsal, they surprise me in the best way.”

Costumes, Choreography & Controlled Chaos

While much of the magic is still in the making, audiences can look forward to a feast of visual and comedic delights: elaborate period costumes, wild musical numbers, and performances that teeter perfectly between historical homage and hilarious parody. Expect bold Renaissance flair, quick-change chaos, and musical numbers that are as clever as they are catchy. “I think people will come for the Shakespeare jokes but stay for the tap-dancing,” one ensemble member joked. “This show is bonkers—and that’s why it’s going to be unforgettable.”
