The Story Behind Bright Blue Sky
BRIGHT BLUE SKY - an original musical remembering the lives forever changed by 9/11
Around the 10th anniversary of September 11, writer Vincent Aniceto came up with the idea of a musical centered on the ordinary people who were simply at work that morning. The thought stayed with him for years before he brought it to composer Tim Nelson, RCT's Managing Artistic Director, in 2020, as the 20th anniversary approached. Nelson, always looking for a new project to sink into, started sketching musical ideas almost immediately. The two developed the show together and brought it to audiences, first as a staged reading in 2021, and now in its newest iteration being presented at the Rose Center Theater this September.
From the start, the writers built their characters as a cross-section of people any audience would recognize: the career-driven professional, the newly arrived immigrant, the overwhelmed boss, the parent pulled between work and family. Each one is a composite, drawn from the collective experience of that morning, the choices people faced and the instincts that carried them through it. For the creative team, building the cast this way let them honor what really happened while keeping every character grounded in something familiar.
The music followed the same instinct. Nelson gave each character their own musical voice, shaped by who they are and what they're up against. So a lighthearted number between office friends and a quieter, more exposed moment behind a closed door both feel like they belong to the people singing them. Some of that lighter material lives early in the show, before the day turns, giving these characters the same full, ordinary lives real people carry with them, humor included, right up until everything changes. The writers weighed that balance carefully throughout the process, treating every laugh as something earned rather than something dropped in for relief.
Getting the story right took years of research: books, articles, documentaries, oral histories, all absorbed before a single scene was finalized. That groundwork shaped every character and every choice on stage. It also shaped how the show has traveled. When BRIGHT BLUE SKY played the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, largely for audiences with no personal connection to that day, people came up afterward to say the show had resonated with them anyway. For the writers, that reaction confirmed something they'd believed from the beginning: people are people, no matter the year or the city they call home.
At its center, BRIGHT BLUE SKY is a story about the people on a single, ordinary morning, and about everyone watching from the outside who still carries a piece of that day with them. The writers hope audiences leave the theater wanting to hold a little tighter to the people they love.
